Cascade Dental’s Post-Op Instructions for Dental Crowns

We’re so excited to be a part of your journey to a healthier, brighter smile. Now that you have your shiny new crown in place, let’s go over some post-op instructions to ensure you have a smooth and comfortable recovery.

  1. Take it easy, champ!

First things first, give yourself a pat on the back for making it through the procedure. Your mouth has been through a bit of a workout, so take it easy for the rest of the day. Avoid any strenuous activities and give yourself some well-deserved downtime.

  1. Numb no more.

The local anesthesia used during the procedure will take some time to wear off. It’s normal to experience some numbness, so be mindful of your eating and drinking. Avoid hot beverages and foods until you have full sensation back to prevent accidental burns.

  1. Skip the crunch.

For the first 24 hours, try to stick to soft foods to give your new crown a chance to settle in. Opt for things like yogurt, soup, mashed potatoes, and smoothies. Say no to crunchy, hard, or sticky foods during this initial period – your teeth will thank you for the gentle treatment.

  1. Show your gums some love.

It’s common to experience some tenderness around the gums for a few days. Rinsing your mouth gently with warm saltwater can help soothe any discomfort. Combine approximately half a teaspoon of salt with warm water in a glass and swirl the mixture in your mouth for about 30 seconds before spitting it out. Repeat this process several times per day as required.

  1. Don’t forget about ice.

If you observe any enlargement or discoloration, gently placing an ice pack on the outer part of your cheek for 15-20 minutes at a time can have remarkable effects. Place a cloth or towel as a protective layer to shield your skin from direct contact with the cold pack.

  1. Medication magic.

If your dentist prescribed pain medication or antibiotics, be sure to take them as directed. It’s essential to stay on top of any discomfort and prevent infection during the initial healing phase. If you have concerns about your medication or experience any side effects, don’t hesitate to reach out to Cascade Dental.

  1. Keep it clean.

Maintaining good oral hygiene is crucial, especially after a dental procedure. Brush your teeth gently, paying extra attention to the area around the crown. Use a soft-bristle toothbrush to avoid irritating your gums. Flossing is still a go, but do it with care to avoid dislodging the crown. If you have any concerns about your oral care routine, Cascade Dental is here to guide you.

  1. Bye-bye bad habits.

If you have any habits like chewing on ice, pens, or using your teeth as tools – now is the time to break them. These habits can put unnecessary stress on your new crown and increase the risk of damage. Treat your teeth with kindness, and they’ll reward you with a radiant smile.
