If you’ve searched r/vancouverwa for dentist advice, you’ve noticed the same questions come up again and again. How do I find someone honest? I haven’t been in years. Will they judge me? What if I don’t have insurance?

Those are fair questions, and a thread full of strangers’ favorite offices doesn’t always answer them. So our team at Cascade Dental, a family and cosmetic dental office in Vancouver, Washington, went through the most common threads and wrote the straight answers we’d give a friend. Each section links to the original Reddit discussion so you can read what locals said, too.

1. “How do I find a dentist I can actually trust?”

From Reddit: Can anyone recommend a good, trustworthy dentist? · Looking for good and honest dentists in the area · Honest Dentist?

The biggest worry in these threads is being sold work you don’t need. A few habits separate a trustworthy office from one to walk away from:

  • They show you the problem. Ask to see the X-ray or intraoral photo. A good dentist will point to the cavity, crack or bone loss and explain what it means.
  • They rank the treatment. An honest plan says what’s urgent, what can wait and what’s optional, not “do it all this month.”
  • They give a written estimate before starting. Costs depend on the diagnosis, so expect a quote after your exam, not before.
  • They’re fine with a second opinion. If an office gets defensive when you want one, that tells you something.

Those are the standards we hold ourselves to. You can meet the doctors on our team before you book.

2. “I haven’t been to the dentist in years. Will they judge me?”

From Reddit: Adult dentist recommendations? · Recommendation for an affordable, non-judgmental dentist

You’re far from the only one. Dentists see patients coming back after five, ten or more years all the time, and a good team is just glad you came in.

Your first visit is mostly information-gathering. Expect a review of your health history, X-rays as needed, an oral cancer screening, a check of your jaw joint and a full look at your teeth and gums. Then the dentist walks you through what they found and your options. Nothing happens without your okay. Here’s what a comprehensive dental exam at our office covers.

One poster in these threads mentioned wisdom teeth coming in sideways. That’s common, and it’s worth getting X-rays sooner rather than later. Impacted teeth can push on neighboring teeth or trap bacteria. Learn more about wisdom teeth removal.

3. “I have serious dental anxiety. Where do I start?”

From Reddit: Gentle dentists · Sedation dentistry · Dentist and oral surgeon for a son with extreme anxiety

Dental anxiety is real, and the right office will plan around it instead of telling you to tough it out. When you call any practice, ask:

  • Can I schedule a short meet-and-greet or consultation before any treatment?
  • Can we agree on a stop signal so I can pause anytime?
  • What comfort or sedation options do you offer, and will I need a referral for them?
  • Can you explain each step before you do it?

Tell the front desk about your anxiety when you book. That’s not oversharing. It helps the team give you longer appointments, more breaks and a slower pace. For complex extractions under deeper sedation, a general dentist may refer you to an oral surgeon. That’s normal and often the safest route.

4. “I don’t have insurance. How do I afford the dentist?”

From Reddit: Low-cost dentist in the area? · Affordable dentist in Vancouver WA (no insurance) – root canal

No insurance doesn’t mean no dentist. Here are the main paths:

  • Ask about self-pay discounts. At Cascade Dental, patients without insurance who pay in full at the time of service get 10% off with cash or check, or 5% off with a credit or debit card.
  • Use financing. We accept CareCredit, which can spread larger treatment over time.
  • Don’t wait on a toothache. Treating a cavity early with a filling costs far less than root canal treatment or an extraction later.
  • If cost is the main barrier, community health centers in Clark County offer sliding-scale fees based on income (see the next question).

5. “Which dentists take Medicaid (Apple Health)?”

From Reddit: Looking for dentist that takes Medicaid

To be upfront: Cascade Dental doesn’t accept Washington Apple Health (Medicaid). We’d rather tell you that now than after you book.

If you have Apple Health, Sea Mar Community Health Centers runs dental clinics in Vancouver, including on NE 88th Street, in Salmon Creek and in East Vancouver. They accept Apple Health and offer a sliding-scale fee. You can also call 211 or visit wa211.org to find other Clark County clinics that accept Apple Health. Call ahead, since clinics can have waitlists for new patients.

6. “How much does a dental crown cost in Vancouver?”

From Reddit: Dental crown

There’s no single price, which is why you’ll see such different numbers in that thread. What drives the cost:

  • Material: Porcelain, zirconia and metal-based crowns are priced differently.
  • Extra work: Some teeth need a core buildup, or a root canal first.
  • Insurance: Many PPO plans treat crowns as a major procedure and cover part of the cost after your deductible.

The best approach is an exam, then an itemized estimate you can compare. If someone quotes you over the phone without seeing the tooth, they’re guessing. Learn about dental crowns at our office, including same-day options.

7. “Where do I go for a dental emergency?”

From Reddit: Need recommendations for an emergency dental clinic

Start with a dentist, not the ER, for most dental problems: a severe toothache, a broken tooth or a lost crown. Hospitals can manage pain and infection, but they usually can’t fix the tooth.

Go to the ER or call 911 if you have swelling that makes it hard to breathe or swallow, a high fever with facial swelling, uncontrolled bleeding, or a serious facial injury.

If you’re a Cascade Dental patient, call (360) 892-2994. During business hours, we’ll do our best to see you the same day. After hours, the call reaches our on-call doctor. For patients with special needs who may need sedation for emergency care, ask whether the office can treat them or will refer you to a pediatric or hospital-based dentist. See our emergency dental care page for what to do while you wait.

8. “Can someone switch from dental implants to dentures?”

From Reddit: Dentures and dental implant recs

Often, yes, but it starts with an exam and 3D imaging. A dentist needs to see why the implant is failing or causing problems, how much bone is left, and whether it makes more sense to remove the implant or build on it.

There’s also a middle ground many people don’t know about: implant-supported dentures. These snap onto a few implants, so they’re more stable than traditional dentures but simpler than replacing every tooth individually. Options like All-on-4 implants are one example.

Compare our dental implant options, or read who’s a good candidate for implants, including people with bone loss.

9. “I need a deep cleaning (scaling and root planing). Do I have to stay with my current dentist?”

From Reddit: Recommendation for a good local dentist for scaling and root planing

No. You can get a second opinion or move your care anytime. Ask your current office to send your recent X-rays and periodontal charting to the new office, which can save you repeat images.

A deep cleaning is recommended when the pockets around your teeth are deep enough that a regular cleaning can’t reach the bacteria below the gumline. We break down what a deep cleaning involves in a separate post, and you can learn about our periodontal treatment.
