Sedation dentistry, also known as conscious sedation reduces fear and anxiety you have with the dentist. Conscious sedation allows patients to achieve their dental needs and goals in a safe and comfortable environment. Sedation is appropriate in a variety of situations, not limited to oral surgery procedures. Fear of the dentist is a real cause of anxiety in dental patients. In fact, sedation may be necessary for a regular cleaning or a simple procedure such as a filling.
At times, our doctors will recommend some form of sedation for longer procedures. Often, we may recommend sedation for oral surgery procedures such as implants, grafting, or extractions. Our doctors have helped countless patients explore the possibilities that sedation dentistry provides. We will help you tailor our services to your specific needs.
At Cascade Dental, we provide multiple sedation options to ease your anxiety. Most importantly, sedation services may be combined or adjusted as needed. We encourage you to come into our Vancouver dental office and discuss the different sedation options with our doctors.
Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, is a sedative agent that our doctors may use to make you comfortable. Specifically, nitrous oxide is a form of conscious sedation that is mixed with oxygen. Most notably, nitrous oxide has been successfully used in dentistry for many years. Typically, nitrous oxide is administered in-office via a nasal cannula and takes only minutes to achieve the effect.
This form of sedation is generally good for patients who do not have an overwhelmingly fear of dentistry but would like something to “take the edge off.” What’s more, within minutes of discontinuation, you will be fully alert and able to continue with the rest of your day as usual.
Oral sedation is one of the available methods of sedation in dentistry. Your doctor may prescribe a medication that you will take before your scheduled appointment. In comparison, oral sedation will achieve a deeper level of sedation than with nitrous oxide alone. The effects of this form of sedation typically last hours after your appointment. Therefore, it is necessary to have someone drive you to and from your appointment.
Intravenous (IV) sedation typically gives our doctors the highest level of control over your sedation needs. With IV sedation we are able to adjust the concentration amount of medication you receive based on your response and the length of your procedure. This form of sedation is best for patients with moderate to severe dental anxiety or those patient undergoing more involved oral surgery procedures.
IV sedation is an excellent option for complicated dental procedures. Additionally, IV sedation is a solution for patients who avoid the dentist and need standard dental care. Dental anxiety causes many people to avoided the dentist for years due to fear.
